First Listen: Michon Young brings a Gladys Knight classic forward

(May 2, 2021) We were late to the party on talented Detroit singer Michon Young, but we’re making up for it now. The singer, who was discovered by legendary Gospel man Marvin Winans, has been issuing singles for most of the past decade, building a following first in the UK, and more recently here in the States, especially for her 2019 single “Let’s Go To Work.”

On her new single, Michon calls upon an underrated song from another Detroit icon, the great Gladys Knight. “You’re #1 (In My Book)” was a top 10 hit in 1983 for Gladys Knight and the Pips on their Leon Sylvers-produced album Visions. I’ve always felt that the track hasn’t received the shine over the years that it deserved, so it is particularly welcome hearing Michon revive it in this tasty remake.

On a winter scene walking through downtown Detroit, Young wraps her soothing alto voice around the understated backing arrangements, reminding us in her own way of just how great the song was, and what a great new singer can do to revive a classic.

Check out Michon Young below, and enjoy this one with us.
