(September 29, 2025) Michelle David is an artist who brings a religious fervor to everything she sings, even if it is not a gospel song. For David, who fronts the band Michelle David & the True Tones, the zeal and passion in her vocals come naturally. The native New Yorker began singing in the church at the age of four, and she was performing with a group called The Mission of Love by the time she turned five.
David’s powerful soprano and expressive stage presence also led her to the theatrical stage, and she’s performed in several musicals, including “The Sound of Motown,” “Glory of Gospel” and “Mahalia.”
But moving to the Netherlands and forming the Michelle David & the True Tones with guitarist/bassist Paul Willemsen, guitarist/bassist Onno Smit, and drummer Bas Bouma allowed David to take her career to the next level. The band’s most recent album, Brothers & Sisters, provides a glimpse into their rhythmic, classic soul sound that blurs the line between R&B and gospel. The same can be said for “Speak To Me,” their latest single and the first track from their soon-to-be-released album. “Speak To Me” is a song that has a message of opening and listening to the internal, inspirational voice. It’s a message that has religious and secular applications.
Or as Michelle David says: “Silence can be golden; but sometimes life needs more clarity. That’s what our new single ‘Speak To Me’ is all about. It’s a song that explores the tension between holding back and opening up—between the comfort of quiet and the necessity of honesty. We wanted to capture that moment when words become essential, when speaking from the heart can heal, connect, or completely change the course of a relationship. ‘Speak To Me’ is a reminder that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s the bridge to true understanding.”
