First Listen: Mia Rebel does it “Any Time I Want To”

(February 13, 2022) Here we are, 2 months into 2022, and incredibly, many seem to want to travel back in time. If The Powers That Be aren’t trying to water down (or outright erase) historic events, they’re rolling back the hard-earned progress made by marginalized groups one bill and one ruling at a time, especially women. This is why Mia Rebel’s song, “Any Time I Want To,” feels like a mantra in the making.

Trained as a dancer in both the Bernice Johnson and Alvin Ailey Academies, , Mia Rebel is a GA native and ‘army brat,’ performing on stages since her teens, including working relationships with Les Paul and George Clinton.

On the midtempo song, Rebel’s her delivery is throaty and self-assured and the accompanying video’s images aren’t just a way to show off exotic locales or a fly wardrobe; they compound the belief that anywhere a woman finds herself is where a woman can, as a sentient being, thrive and handle her business. People wanting autonomy and respect for themselves should encourage it for others, an ideal just as straightforward as Mia’s mission statement: “It’s about the right, to walk around this whole wide world anytime I want to.”

Whether it lands on your latest treadmill playlist, becomes a part of your morning commute or just a song you chant to get you focused while starting your day, “Anytime I Want To” inspires you, encourages you, and puts listeners on notice that Mia Rebel is carving her path: she takes her moniker seriously, our sovereignty matters and yes, she will be heard. Any questions?
