First Listen: Ready For the World’s Melvin Riley wants to be left “Alone”

(June 3, 2026) There’s no denying the musical impact left behind by Ready for the World. With Prince and The Time being their North Star, the Flint, Michigan-based electro funk band fired off a hot streak of singles that lit urban contemporary radio, from fiery uptempo jams (“Oh Shelia,” “Digital Display,” “Long Time Comin’”) to sultry bedroom ballads (“Tonight,” “Love You Down,” “Gently”). Even at the dawn of the ‘90s as new jack swing dominated, Ready for the World stayed active, contributing the Top 10 R&B hit “Can He Do It (Like This, Can He Do It Like That”) — an erotic tease that sounds like the precursor to Jodeci. And at the helm was frontman Melvin Riley, Jr., whose signature vocals, sound and musical compositions left an indelible impression on a number of modern R&B acts spanning multiple generations, including Usher, Chris Brown, Keith Sweat, Mint Condition, Trey Songz and many others.

It’s been over thirty years since Riley embarked on a solo career, releasing 1994’s Ghetto Love with the Keith Sweat-channeled “Whose Is It?” leading the way. Now the Ready for the World co-founder and lead vocalist is stepping out with a new solo project, his first since 2000. On the first single, “They Won’t Leave Me Alone,” Riley pours his heart out on a slick contemporary R&B melody that feels so reminiscent of ‘90s and early 2000s, borrowing elements from Teddy Riley swag bedazzled in Usher and 112 vibes. It also strikes a different tone lyrically, as Riley finds himself on the defensive end, pouring out his heart to one while shaking off a bevy of contenders: “You know I’ve done my best to be good to you/But these girls, ya’ know, won’t let me/They do what they gon’ do.”

With a due date set for June 9, No AI — The Album is an ambitious double album with a timely agenda promoting real instrumentation, non-compromised songwriting and a laser focus on celebrating real musicianship in a drastically AI-driven environment. “They Won’t Leave Me Alone,” solely written and produced by Riley, is a glowing example of that process, proving that soul music is always better when it comes from one. “This album is about bringing the heart back to music,” Riley echoes. “Every note, every lyric, every melody comes from a real place. It was time for a double album that reflects passion, creativity, and the human spirit. No AI – The Album is about real love, real truth, and real soul.”
