First Listen: Melanie Fiona “Wants it All” on beautiful new ballad

melaniefiona2023

There was a time a little more than a decade ago, when singer and songwriter Melanie Fiona seemed to be everywhere. The talented Canadian singer born Melanie Fiona Hallim had an international smash album with the Motown album The Bridge, and a charttopping single with “It Kills Me.”

The hits slowed down after that auspicious debut, but Fiona’s talent didn’t. She continued to tour and perform as an independent artist throughout the 10s, though on a quieter scale.

So it was a delight this week to hear Melanie Fiona’s powerful voice back with the brand new self-penned single, “I Want It All,” on her own Melanie Fiona label. It is a piano-led power ballad, the kind of song that could have worked 20 years ago just as well as it works now. And it definitely works now as a reminder of why we took notice of the singer back in 2009. Actually, as we dug in we found that this was recorded seven years ago, but is being released now as a single.

The song is a self-affirming ode to reach for higher levels than others are telling you that you can achieve.

And I want it all, want it all
Nothing is too big or too small
I want it all, want it all
I won’t accept impossible
I’ll be more than happy to wait
Than to settle today
I want it all

It’s the kind of message that will resonate with all, but perhaps especially with the oppressed who have had artificial limits placed on their expectations. And Melanie Fiona sells it beautifully on the vocals, while explaining visually at the end of the music video to whom she is really singing the song. Check it out below.
