First Listen: Marva King is “Superbubblicious”

(June 18, 2018) If you have attained a certain age, you might remember when the gum Bubblicious came out. Well, you might not, but I do. Bubblicious was this extreme bubble gum that made really big bubbles. But it was the flavor that made Bubblicious more distinct than the Bazooka that we had been chewing. But what really made that gum pop was the flavor that had these really strong contrast between sweet and tart.

So “Superbublicious,” the title of singer and actress Marva King’s latest single, kind of took me back. While this song is not about bubble gum, it definitely pops and is filled with flavor. The juice comes from King waxing rhapsodic about a guy who has the stuff that can make a sister’s mouth water. The track has a package full of sweet and tart contrasts, ranging from King’s vocals that move from a come-hither coo to a seductive growl, to tartness from the bass line that steps knee deep into the one and some serious rock inspired shredding on the guitar by producer and The Time alum Jesse Johnson. Check it out.
