First Listen: Mariah Carey Paints His “Portrait”
November 21, 2018 – There are folks who enjoy taking shots at Mariah Carey, who delight in her very public challenges, and who have declared the end of her career more than once. I’m decidedly not among them; she hooked me with her cover version of “I’ll Be There” in 1992, and I’ve been in her corner ever since.
But even I was skeptical when I heard that Mariah had recently released a new album, Caution, and I resisted listening until today. Which I now regret. The album is a return to form, and there is one track in particular, a ballad called “Portrait,” that made me smile immediately: Her signature voice remains rich and sweet here, with more texture around its edges, and she just owns the song like few others could. Enjoy.
