First Listen: Mamas Gun gives “Food For The Flames”

(December 3, 2025) UK soul band Mamas Gun has always had a place in our SoulTracking hearts. Hitting it off from the very beginning with their debut LP (2009’s Routes to Riches) and with four other albums to their credit, this talented five-piece has captivated audiences internationally for their evolving blending pop sensibilities with R&B grooves. By adapting Hall & Oates swagger, soft rock explorations with a heart for Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye tapestry, they have become one of the most consistent bourgeoning blues-soul bands of the 21st century.  And ain’t no stopping them now as they drop their latest single from the studio to our ears.

Penned by longtime guitarist Terry Lewis and frontman Andy Platts, “Food for the Flames” feels like a soothing daydream into the sunset of Marvin Gaye soulful bliss. Echoing the smooth charm of Main Ingredient’s “Let Me Prove My Love to You” and thanks to its marvelously captured analog sound from the recording process, the track plays out like a timeless AM gold classic. And as always, Platts — with his smooth falsetto pleas and heartfelt crooning, bringing the lyrics to life as he describes how love—like flames — requires a certain amount of care and attention to keep the fires burning. There’s also a shredding guitar solo by Lewis that enters the mix towards the back of the song using Ernie Isley ferocity.

During the last two years, the band has tested the song while on the road during their extensive touring. And the feedback has been electric, proving to be a favorite with live audiences. “We knew when we heard this song that this was a special one,” says bassist Cameron Dawson. “There was a real excitement in the room — the sort that sends shivers.”
