(April 30, 2026) It has been less than a year since we introduced SoulTrackers to Madeleine Johnson, who goes by the artist name Madz. But her background as a festival favorite in the Washington, DC area since 2015 – after moving from her native Philippians – was already reeling fans into her versatile musicality. And no matter what arrangement she stirs up, this artistic multi-tasker locks the vibe in, anchored by a steady backing band. Besides two albums and several singles, including First Listens “Feel the Funk” and “The Sun Inside,” Madz’s captivating voice possesses a pure soulful presence without the diva trappings for an easy, yet compelling listening experience.
Changing gears from the pop flavored “The Sun Inside,” Madz taps into her jazz proficiencies that won over D.C. festival goers with “Got Somebody,” our latest First Listen. A cool Nancy Wilson-like jazz phrasing blends into an organic arrangement, frosted by Eddie Baccus, Jr.’s delicious saxophone framing.
Alongside band regulars guitarist Dee Rock and drummer Stacey Ellis, Madz triples up on keys, bass guitar and untweaked background vocals, another testament to her impeccable musicianship. Yet what personalizes the storyline is her sensibility towards the listeners: “I wrote this song to capture the energy of late-night groove and warmth of human connection.” Check it out!
