First Listen: Madison LaRae tells a story on “Maturity”

(April 1, 2025) Some artists resist being compared to other performers. Madison LaRae doesn’t shy away. Her Tik Tok post promoting her latest song “Maturity,” plays a portion of the song as photos of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott rotate.

The caption that accompanies each photo states “If you like, Erykah Badu” or “If you like Jill Scott.” So, Madison LaRae ain’t scarred, and she should not be. The collage ends with a photo and caption that introduces LaRae to the world.

“Maturity” falls nicely into that space between 1970s Roy Ayers and the Neo-soul of the late 90s and early 2000s that’s the sweet spot for fans of that wonderfully creative and beloved era.

LaRae’s previous work, the EP Transformation and Insights: Vol. 1, showcases her work as an imaginative voice in the spoken word sphere. “Violet Flowers” is a sensual, percussive ballad expression of love to a man who makes her love bloom like a flower in spring time.

“Maturity” is an introspective song that explores the limits of love and even the best intentions to overcome two people who aren’t quite ready. Check out Madison LaRae’s “Maturity” here.
