(August 14, 2021) British R&B trio Loose Ends scored an enviable succession of international hits in the ‘80s, along the way bridging the gap between pure R&B and funky dance grooves in a trendsetting and influential way. Gems like “Hangin’ on a String (Contemplating),” “Nights of Pleasure,” and “Stay a Little While, Child” have endured as favorites with a unique lyrical edge and sophisticated arrangements—not to mention the standout vocal performances of founder Carl McIntosh and Jane Eugene.
Close to three decades have passed since Loose Ends’ last single release, although various members of the original group have toured in different incarnations. Listeners holding out to experience the band’s original flavor once more will likely find some solace in McIntosh’s new take on the 1986 Zagora album track, “Gonna Make You Mine.” Initially led by Eugene, McIntosh has tweaked the words and set the melodies to a slowed-down, jazzed-up soundscape which pays homage to Barry White while infusing tropical nuances.
Appending the tune with the romantically assuaging “Forever More,” McIntosh weaves the storyline of “Gonna Make You Mine” into a fine medley of passion and commitment. His chops still resonate with the distinctive flair which has helped to maintain Loose Ends’ devoted following in the absence of new recordings. The downtempo rhythm may take some by surprise at first. Give it a fair shake, though, and “Gonna Make You Mine, Forever More” will likely become a welcome and soothing addition to your smoothed-out playlists.
