Another Groove: The London Grammar See “Flickers” in Their Heads

londongrammar

(July 20, 2016) Welcome to the second installment of our Another Groove series, dedicated to introducing new music that is neither “pure” soul nor R&B but which includes some elements of those genres, often rhythmic, by artists generally categorized outside of the soul arena. We feature this week “Flickers” by the UK’s London Grammar

The Grammar are a trio of guitarist Dan Rothman, keyboardist/percussionist Dominic Major, and singer/lyricist Hannah Reid, whose big, beautiful voice is the band’s signature. Their music does not fall neatly in any category, but often features emotional depth and ambient, dreamy soundscapes.  “Flickers” is anchored by a circular, electric guitar-driven groove and features reggae and African inflections. The gentle guitar textures are very reminiscent of those created by Andy Summers of the Police, and the track may well have fit nicely on that band’s seminal album Regatta de Blanc.  Enjoy.
