(July 28, 2026) New Birth was one of the great self-contained funk bands of the 1970s. Their takes on ballads like “Wildflower,” “Dream Merchant” and “It’s Been a Long Time” are Quiet Storm classics, and their version of “I Can Understand It” is downright funky.
The band’s trio of powerful and distinctive vocals gave New Birth a signature sound. Brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson, along with Londee Wiggins, always gave memorable performances. Wiggins continues to perform and release new music as a solo artist. Her latest is a smooth R&B mid-tempo steppers jam titled “Hang-In Out,” and it is featured in this First Listen.
“Hang-In Out” is a party song that celebrates the joy of going out on the town with friends and dancing with that special person. The track is a departure from the hard driving, gospel infused funk that Wiggins sang as a member of New Birth. Still her strong voice remains a constant.
