First Listen: Leela James delivers an instant classic

(November 5, 2023) For two decades, we’ve reveled in the music of Leela James, one of the most timeless and underrated singers of her generation. She possesses the kind of rich tones that would have made her a blue star in the 40s, a soul star in the 60s or a funk star in the 70s. But she is of a time when radio doesn’t fully appreciate full-bodied voices of adult women who sing tales of a mature life experienced.

Fortunately, fans have continued to discover Leela James through other avenues (including this website) and she has returned their loyalty with a clear musical vision, using her significant talents to bring classic soul sounds forward to the 2020s — never clearer than on her fantastic new album, Thought U Knew.

On an album of winners, James’ new single, “Whatcha Done Now” may be the winningest, a steamy single produced by the great Rex Rideout that has an instant classic feel to it. And the slow burning number lays perfectly for that incredible alto voice that James brings to every affair.

Check out “Whatcha Done Now,” and enjoy Leela James all over again.
