(July 14, 2023) We’ve been covering Leela James since she first broke out nearly two decades ago with her auspicious debut album A Change Is Gonna Come. And the powerful-voiced singer has continued to grace various styles of music over the years, from soul to rock to blues, making every song her own through her phrasing and especially through that voice.
Two years after landing another hit album with See Me, the past SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award winner has returned with a hot number that plays down the lane in which she shines most. “Right Back In It” is a midtempo song that has some modern R&B elements, but a vibe that has classic soul written all over it. It is the familiar tale of a woman who finds herself falling back in love with a lover who seems to come in and out of her life.
Of course Leela shines vocally on the song, giving a timeless performance on a cut that should appeal to both contemporary R&B audiences and old soulheads.
