It’s been a bit since we’ve heard new music from Leela James, in our view one of the greatest vocalists of her generation.
Last month, Leela quietly released a new single that deftly mixes a classic soul sound with modern touches. Her vocal performance is simply terrific and the steady groove behind her keeps the midtempo “Don’t Want You Back” humming along just fine. And now she has released the music video for the song, and it definitely packs a punch. Directed by Chris Scholar and set in South Central Los Angeles, it tells the story of a lover not worth keeping, and a bit of sweet revenge by Leela and her friends.
