(September 12, 2025) If you were to choose two contemporary singers who could have been stars at any time in the last 75 years — with any musical style — you might pick Ledisi and Gregory Porter. Possessing both powerful voices and unique interpretive gifts, Ledisi and Porter have been consistent critical and commercial favorites over nearly two decades in the pop, jazz, R&B and even Gospel areas. So it is a treat that they have combined for a new cut to be included on Ledisi’s long-awaited tribute to Dinah Washington, For Dinah.
“You’ve Got What It Takes” was written by Clyde Otis and Murray Stein and, in 1959, Dinah Washington gave her own swinging interpretation in a duet with Brook Benton, taking the song all the way to the Top 10. The song was a joy-inducing marvel, and that bliss is recaptured in the new Ledisi/Porter version. Produced by Ledisi with Christian McBride, the updated “You’ve Got” is both jazzier and a bit more restrained than the original, and the two stars sound like they’re having a blast on it.
