First Listen: Law doesn’t want a “Controller”

(July 10, 2021) Tall, dark, handsome and…domineering? A guy who’s so intent on giving you direction that he might as well be a crossing guard? Yeah, not a good look and it kills the romantic vibe when a man thinks he can constantly tell his lady what to do. Instead of bemoaning her fate and pondering her next move, Law — a TikTok sensation with her “Catch a Cheater” series—-is channeling her inner Janet Jackson (circa 1986) by telling Ol’ Boy to bounce in her latest release, entitled (what else?) “Controller.”

A Kingston, NY native who’s immersed herself in school choirs, talent shows and even gracing center stage at Carnegie Hall, “Controller” is a stealthy, mid-tempo ‘declaration of independence’ that uses smooth, chilled vocals to tell her soon-to-be ex that they’re no longer the two and she isn’t the one: “I do not need your permission, to just go and live my life, and I did not ask your opinion…it’s like you’re a warden, and I’m wearing all these chains.” The pacing and delivery is reminiscent Aaliyah’s “Loose Rap,” a dance-able beat and coy vocals delivering a message that packs a subtle punch.

With a freshly-minted production deal (Water Music) and yes, her burgeoning social media imprint, the world is Law’s stage and “Controller” is a catchy invitation to get familiar early, since that’s the best way to catch a potential star on the rise. `
