(October 26, 2018) After faithfully serving as backing vocalist for Gloria Gaynor and dropping a bundle of singles on us, Latrese Bush is standing tall and stepping into her own thanks to the recent release of her debut album, The Collection. And the second single from the disc is surely bound to take the gifted singer to the top.
On “The Best,” the South Carolina native once again teams up with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Alvin Garrett. Inside the laidback groove, she uses Anita Baker style templates and Ledisi-type belting and is surrounded by warm guitar struts from jazz virtuoso Eric Essix, as the smooth melodies resemble a smart melding of Janet’s “Funny How Time Flies” and Atlantic Starr’s “Send for Me.” Bush convinces the listener on the chorus using sweet romantic affections (“You are the very best, the best part of me/You make my life complete”) and hits a glowing climax near the song’s fade using triumphant soulful ad-libs.
It’s an astonishing must-hear, and SoulTrackers are blessed to have the opportunity of hearing it.
