First Listen: Laticia Carrington shines on “Thief In The Night”

(February 14, 2025) Love is a subject that has bedeviled humanity since the beginning of time. Philosophers, scientists and clerics are among the individuals who have theorized on the affairs of the heart. They’ve tried their best, but often their conclusions have proven unsatisfactory.

Poets and singers have probably come the closest to helping people understand what love is and the how and why it keeps us tied up in knots. What have the singers and poets taught us about love? That we will never really figure it out, but we can enjoy the lesson.

Laticia Carrington’s “Thief In The Night” wraps her love lesson in a classic sound that might remind some of the music that came out of Philadelphia International Records. When people described the arrangements for a PIR tune, the words sophisticated and lush often get used.

I hear that in the string arrangements in “Thief In The Night.” I also it in the backing vocals and in the tempo changes that occur before Carrington launches into the chorus. Carrington possesses a vocal instrument that can move with the many changes in tempo and pace that occur throughout “Thief In The Night.”  She can come in sweetly and in harmony with the backing vocals, and her range can go into the upper register on this song where she seeks to explain the unpredictable nature of love.
