First Listen: Lady Blackbird Laments “It’ll Never Happen Again”

lady_blackbird

October 11, 2021 — My brother and I, both guitarists who treasure our instruments, have over the years developed our own highest form of praise for emerging, virtuoso guitarists when they first surface. We email one another a link to their track or video and say “that’s it, I’m smashing my guitars.” I imagine most guitarists felt that way when first hearing Hendrix!

If I were a singer, I might smash my microphone upon hearing the superb Marley Munroe, P/K/A Lady Blackbird. Hers is a voice of experience, akin to an aged and ambered Scotch, smokey and exquisitely textured. She fully inhabits a song, and if you didn’t know better, you’d think she’s lived the lyrics in even her cover versions.  We feature here her cover of Tim Hardin’s “It’ll Never Happen Again” from her debut album Black Acid Soul, a slow-burning ballad of lost love.  This is sublime artistry, SoulTrackers, don’t miss it.
