(January 10, 2024) A house/gospel song might be a contradiction to some. However, Lady Alma sees no contradiction in fusing the two genres. Her new song, “Joy (Hallelujah),” featuring vocalist Kenny Bobien and produced by the legendary Marley Marl, plants its feet firmly in the ebullient intersection between these two genres.
Gospel and house music share some thematic and musical similarities. Both genres place an emphasis on delivering upbeat, positive, and inspirational messages while seeking to elicit physical manifestations of that joy. When the spirit gets into a person listening to a great gospel song or a good house song, that person must move. The instrumental arrangement of praise and worship songs often possess the same insistent, driving bass and percussion hear in house music.
So, when Lady Alma and Kenny Bobien fused the words of a bible-based praise and worship song with the pulsating bass and percussion heard in house, the duo was being true to both traditions. Besides, songs of inspirational and energetic dance jams have always been a part of Lady Alma’s repertoire. Check out “Joy (Hallelujah)” featuring Kenny Bobien and produced by Marley Marl here.
