(February 14, 2023) Kimberly Brewer has spent much of her storied career providing background vocals for such superstars as Vanessa Williams, Will Downing, and Earth Wind & Fire, but she is best known for her years of work with the great Stevie Wonder.
It has been a treat for us over the past few years seeing Kimberly move 20 feet forward to the front of the stage, with a series of attractive, soulful singles. She continues that string with her brand new release, and also brings along soul music royalty in the process.
“Don’t Make Me Wait Too Long” is a driving midtempo that was written by Wonder for the great Roberta Flack back in 1980. And it was Wonder’s choice for Kimberly Brewer to cover it now, and he even agreed to play harmonica on it. She tells us, “He suggested ‘Don’t Make Me Wait Too Long.’ He also suggested that I make it a duet with R&B sensation Joe. To my surprise, Mr. Wonder called me with Joe on the other line. Yes I ‘fan girled’ out for a second but I quickly gained my composure. Business is business!”
The new recording has the feel of Stevie’s classic 1985 song “Stranger On The Shore of Love,” and Brewer’s bright, expressive vocals shine up front. They’re also complemented nicely on a second verse sung by Joe, where he glides easily between falsetto and his natural register, sounding great.
“Don’t Make Me Wait Too Long,” released on Brewer’s own Kimberlily Records, should receive a warm welcome from both Adult Soul radio and SoulTrackers. We are absolutely loving it. Check it out below.
