First Listen: Kimberly Brewer delivers another “Sweet” gem

(October 26, 2020) Kimberly Brewer has spent much of her storied career providing background vocals for such superstars as Vanessa Williams, Will Downing, and Earth Wind & Fire, but she is best known for her years of work with the great Stevie Wonder.

More recently, we’ve been following Kimberly’s solo releases, and she has another one this week that really hits the spot for us. Featuring noted saxman Walter Beasley and some of the top session musicians, “Just That Sweet To Me” is a light ballad that straddles the border between soul and jazz in a manner similar to so many great singles of the late 80s and early 90s.

The song’s genesis was truly personal to Kimberly. She had loved the Greg Curtis original track, but envisioned a different direction. She added her own lyrics and, with help from friend Byron Miller on the bridge, turned it into a special love song. She tells us, “For me it’s the sweetest part of a relationship whether it’s a new hot relationship or an older settled relationship. It’s what you feel about your significant other. It’s as though that person checks every box on your list of what you want your partner, husband, wife, love of your life to be.”

Kimberly purrs through the song beautifully, ultimately providing the kind of nighttime jam that we never get tired of. Check out “Just That Sweet To Me” below and welcome Kimberly Brewer back to SoulTracks.
