First Listen: Kim Tibbs lets us know that “It’s Alright”

(October 14, 2024) Kim Tibbs calls Intermission, her upcoming third album, a soulful evolution. Evolution is defined as the process by which a thing develops from an earlier form. Using the phrase to describe her sound lets Tibbs explain how her fist two albums served as the building blocks for what fans will hear when Intermissiondrops in 2025.

Tibbs provides a preview through releases “Believe in Something Called Love” and “It’s Alright,” the tune featured in this First Listen.

For if her work on Kim, her self-titled debut, and The Science of Completion: Vol .1 earned her the title of traditional soul artist, her latest releases show that Tibbs can expand her repertoire in a more contemporary mode without sacrificing the soulfulness in her vocals and lyrics: “After T.S.O.C.V.I., I wanted to show a softer, more mainstream side of myself and take full creative control. …INTERMISSION became that expression—recorded right in my home studio, where I felt the freest.”

Tibbs infuses contemporary hip-hop influenced arrangements alongside her soulful organ playing and tight brass arrangements on a song where she sings about diving fully into music as a way to escape the stresses of modern life.

That’s a classic topic that songwriters return to, and we need look no further than the news of the day to understand why. Check out Kim Tibbs’ “It’s Alright Here.”
