(October 9, 2020) Most SoulTrackers are familiar with soul legend Donny Hathaway as well as his Grammy Award winning daughter, Lalah Hathaway. Fewer know of Donny’s other daughter, but she has been charming audiences with her own terrific vocal performances for more than two decades. Kenya Hathaway has been known mostly as a guest and studio vocalist for contemporary jazz artists like Lee Ritenour, as well as a background singer (along with ST fave Sy Smith) during multiple seasons of American Idol. She is a true talent, and we always look forward to hearing projects in which she participates.
For his latest album, contemporary jazz pianist David Garfield wanted to take on an Aretha classic, and he brought in Kenya and former Chicago vocalist Bill Champlin to help out. The result is a terrific updating of “Rock Steady” that keeps its soulful rock aura, but with an added jazz element that works beautifully. The big horns and Garfield’s keys work add a fullness to the sound of the recording, and Kenya shines up front.
Check out this new verson of “Rock Steady” — which was just released this morning — and make sure you get to know the talented Kenya Hathaway.
