First Listen: Kenny Lattimore takes us “Over The Rainbow” with gentle single

(May 14, 2026) It’s hard to believe that 30 years have passed since Kenny Lattimore first rose to solo stardom with the endearing “For You,” which quickly became a timeless staple of weddings and anniversary celebrations. Over the subsequent decades, the Washington, DC-born crooner has upheld high standards of sophisticated R&B through a dozen albums and a long run of singles ranging from the smooth to the funky.

Having taken a breather following 2021’s Here to Stay to build a new family with wife Faith, Lattimore returns this month with the aptly titled Lullabies for You, a collection of songs inspired by the time he has spent in recent months singing to his daughter-on-the-way during Faith’s second pregnancy. The first preview of the album comes via a remarkably tender and comforting interpretation of “Over the Rainbow.”

Opening with supple piano lines which slowly make way for serene string fills, Lattimore’s rendition is at once whispered, filled with strength, and marked by range and clarity. With no-frills phrasing that fits the revered lyrics like a glove, he adapts the tune’s classic optimism with calmness and peace that is sure to ease listeners of all ages into a dreamlike state.
