First Listen: Kawan DeBose gives the “Best I Got” on classic cover

(February 28, 2026) It is not surprising that Kawan DeBose knows what a to do with a timeless classic like Anita Baker’s “Giving You the Best That I Got.” DeBose’s resume includes all the skills that suit him to place his unique and carefully crafted take on the tune. He not only has a buttery tenor, but he is an accomplished pianist, songwriter, and producer who has collaborated with the likes of Beyonce, P.J. Morton, and Ledisi.

DeBose uses every arrow in his musical quiver to transform Baker’s jazzy wedding anthem into a gospel-tinged prayer of total love and devotion. And yes, there is still a touch of jazz that stays through some deft improvisation on the piano.

However, DeBose, through his soaring vocals as well as angelic backing harmonies, takes us to church on this one. The call and and response between DeBose and the backing vocals is straight out of the church and his falsetto shoots past the moon. “Best I Got” checks in at less than two minutes, but less is more on this one. Check it out here.
