(September 30, 2025) Welsh-born, Yorkshire-based soul/jazz singer Kat Eaton has certainly paid her dues. By rubbing her elbows with acclaimed acts while touring with Mamas Gun, Marc Broussard and Gregory Porter, she’s already put in the work with two albums – 2021’s Talk to Me and 2024’s Honestly – along with a round of singles. And her songwriting abilities have led to collaborations with names like Andy Platts (Mamas Gun, Young Gun Silver Fox) and Ruby Turner of Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra fame. Now the UK singer-songwriter is stepping forward with a captivating new single that’s sure to please soul music lovers.
Coming out the gate is “Break Free,” a sultry blues tune dipped in the healing waters of gospel. After showing off an unguarded vulnerability about life’s tribulations while “holding on to a piece of [her] heart,” she makes her way through the groovy chorus using positive affirmations: “I gotta break free/I gotta believe that I know it’s right for me.” It’s smoky liberation soul dressed up in Dusty Springfield tapestry. And she rises to the occasion on the Nick Atkinson-produced track by breaking through the storm clouds like Bonnie Raitt. Blessed with a marvelous lower register, Kat’s an earthy contralto with luxurious grit on the edges.
This is the first single from the anticipated third album, What Happens Now, expected to drop in the Spring of next year. Check out this First Listen on “Break Free” and let us know your thoughts.
