(September 28, 2020) He is a prodigy whose talent has attracted some of the biggest names in jazz to work with him. His name is Justin Lee Schultz, and the 13 year old Johannesburg, South Africa native and Durham, North Carolina transplant is prolific on piano, guitar, bass guitar, and talkbox, and has an effervescent love of music that shows through brightly in his work. “Music brings me joy because I can express myself when I play. I can also get creative when I’m improvising,”
We are getting ready to hear Justin’s full lengther, Gruv Kid, coming on November 13 (Shanachie Entertainment), with the musical help of such luminaries as Bob James, Harvey Mason, Najee, Gerald Albright, Jonathan Butler, Pieces of A Dream, Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown and Kim Waters.
In the meantime, we are excited to be able to give SoulTrackers their first taste of this talent. Justin leads off the project with an exciting tribute to the great Stevie Wonder in an energetic cover of Wonder’s classic single, “Do I Do,” with his sister, 16 year old Jamie Leigh Shultz, on drums.
It is tough to for an early teen to try to capture the magic of a revered classic, but Justin and company make this version of “Do I Do” an exercise of pure joy. Check out the World Premiere of this great cut below, and welcome Justin Lee Schultz to SoulTracks. You will absolutely be hearing his name for years to come.
