(June 9, 2018) Throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, Miami-born Judy Cheeks chartered a vast musical landscape ranging from the blues (her Ike & Tina Turner-produced debut LP), to soulful disco (“Mellow Lovin’”), and rousing, inspirational dance anthems (“Reach” and “Respect”). Following her first gospel LP in 2013, the globetrotting chanteuse has now unveiled a melodious R&B dancer in the form of “Crying in the Rain,” a personal composition which she first gave to the legendary Randy Crawford in 2000 (under the title “When the Evening Comes”).
Swarming with layers of atmospheric keyboard work, Cheeks shines through with a sincere delivery of sensitive yet cautioning lyrics of a relationship on the rocks. Veering between delicately phrased verses and boldly nuanced choruses, she effectively renders a performance that resonates brightly both as a floor-filler and sing-along anthem.
