(June 6, 2019) The name Judith Hill likely rings a bell among listeners in many soul music circles, although the connection might not always be instantaneous. For over 15 years, she’s been an in-demand session and touring vocalist, lending her sturdy chops to a rich array of artists including Calvin Richardson, Elton John, and Incubus. She started to shine out front more regularly in 2013, via her prominent feature in the documentary film 20 Feet from Stardom and as a contestant on The Voice, and since that time she’s released two critically lauded albums of her own.
Now, she’s revving things up with the sassy and driving “Upside,” which was recently featured in season 15 of the ever-popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Breaking in the spicy verses quickly, she infuses the chugging guitar and percussion rhythms with an earthy and bright vocal conviction before steering straight ahead into the song’s effervescent chorus. It’s a crisp and riveting listening experience that encapsulates the emotional rewards of self-confidence and clear ambition. Take a First Listen to “Upside” below and let us know what you think!
