(January 6, 2025) Singer and songwriter Jokia brings a wealth of life experience to her music. She’s a wife, an expectant mother, and a military veteran who has a master’s degree who hopes to earn her doctorate. Jokia artistic quiver also includes acting in addition to being a singer and songwriter.
Jokia sings gospel and R&B music and sees no contradiction in doing so. For her, the source of inspiration for both genres comes from a place of love. The topics that Jokia addresses are drawn from real life experiences and emotions. That’s why a song like “Brand New” from Jokia’s Love R&B EP possesses spiritual components even though it is a love song inspired by her husband.
The imagery of being totally remade and transformed by a relationship is a theme addressed in scripture, as well as secular literature. Jokia uses the recognizable intro from the Stylistics’ classic love ballad “You Make Me Feel Brand New” as a launching point to tell the story of the many ways that the love of her life renewed her life.
“Brand New” has a contemporary R&B sound, but the lyrics are firmly and sweetly old school. Vocally, Jokia soars above the arrangement, infusing the lyrics with the combination of innocence and passion that fans of old school R&B came to take for granted.
