(August 28, 2025) Johnny Gill is a vocalist we can count on to bring muscularity and sensuality to his balladry. In that regard Gill is a throwback to a generation of soul men that include Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye. Whether Gill dove into a duet with Stacy Lattisaw, added his soaring vocals to New Edition’s New Jack, be one third of the baby making music collaboration LSG or stand in the spotlight as a solo artist, his silky soul baritone always stood out.
Now, Gill brings his classic soul vocals to a contemporary R&B number that might capture the ears of the young’uns. “One Night” is blue light jam where Gill combines mea culpa begging with satisfaction guaranteed swagger. He might not need to do that much convincing. Gill admits that he’s done some things he shouldn’t have done or said things he should not have said. However, his better half gives as good as she gets, and she may be as eager as her man to cross that thin line between affection and animosity.
The arrangement is sparse, intimate, and sleek, featuring trap drums, atmospheric keyboards and grinding bass line. The arrangement gives Gill the space to, well… be Johnny Gill. Check out the simmering bedroom ballad “One Night” by Johnny Gill here.
