Well, they says “Playas gonna play,” and that’s what’s happening in the new song “Behind Closed Doors” from Johnny Gill. It’s the lead single from his upcoming album, Game Changer. The song is unfortunately fairly generic, but Gill sings the heck out of it, showing off his still-strong falsetto, even on material that doesn’t excite. What is more unusual is the accompanying video. It starts out pretty typical, as he and model Nicole Murphy do the usual R&B candles-and-bedroom scenes. But then Gill pokes a bit of fun at some of the rumors that have been floating about him for years, creating an unexpected love triangle that catches the viewer off guard.
Johnny Gill has always been a great singer in search of a great song, and we’re not quite sure that “Behind Closed Doors” is it. But we love that he still sounds so good at age 48, and we’re hoping the rest of the album has some character to go along with that voice.
