(December 12, 2023) Johnny Britt has some great collaborations on After We Play, his newest album, and several of those releases found their way to our site. “Butterflies” with the great Will Downing on vocal and “Summer Love” featuring saxophonist Gerald Albright both received First Listen treatment.
The trumpeter rendered his interpretation of “Goin’ Out of My Head,” and paired with Little Anthony on the tune that the velvet voiced crooner and lead singer of the Imperials scored a Top 10 hit in 1965.
Britt’s latest release from this project is the smooth ballad “Ocean Waves,” and on this track he pairs with up-and-coming bassist Blair Bryant. Bryant is making a name for himself in the contemporary jazz world where his playing draws comparisons to legends such as Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke.
Britt and Bryant make a musical connection on “Ocean Waves.” Britt deploys his buttery tenor vocals along with his trademark muted horn to tell the story of a daydream about spending time on an oceanside beach with a woman who is present in his fantasies but absent in reality.
Trumpeter and bassist engage in an instrumental call and response on this track with each player answering the other’s understated yet imaginative solos. Check out the song and the sensual video here.
