(December 18, 2017) Jennifer Hudson has lived the life of five people, with an endless series of emotional ups and downs that would crush a weaker person. She has an enviable career on stage and screen, but many personal tragedies, including the brutal killing of family members and difficult romantic relationships that have often played out in the glare of the spotlight.

Those emotions all come out in an amazing new ballad that Hudson has released in anticipation of her Epic Records debut. The video for “Burden Down,” directed by Sam Lecca, shows Hudson quietly playing a piano, lamenting a relationship gone sour: “I’m a river, I keep running on / I’m a pillar you got used to leaning on / Underneath it is a person / I’m a woman, and I’m hurting.” The song builds and, by the end, Hudson moves away from the piano and steps up into an a cappella solo that is something to be seen.

You can’t help but feel that Hudson is baring her soul to her fans and to some unidentified person on the performance, and the song is both chilling and beautiful. Check out “Burden Down” below and tell us what you think
