(November 26, 2025) For several years, jazz leader Dr. Gail Jhonson paved a solid path as a brilliant keyboardist, arranger and founder of the all-women ensemble, Jazz In Pink – which includes members such as trumpeter Tatiana Tate and Dr. Jhonson’s daughter, vocalist Tamina Khyrah-Joi.
Since her childhood, Tamina learned much under her mother’s wing and has since become a solid singer in her own right. Like Dr. Jhonson, Ms. Khyrah-Joi is a Berklee College of Music alumnus and put in the work as a vocalist backing greats from Phil Perry to Alicia Keys.
Tamina and Jazz In Pink bring to us this holiday offering, “Christmas Candlelight,” which was released just days ago. This smooth jazz-rooted arrangement, augmented by keyboards and sax, is a fine backdrop for Ms. Khyrah-Joi’s lead and backing vocals – which are pleasant to the ear and not overwhelming. The tune, written and produced by Burnie Stevenson, shines and shimmers from beginning to end.
With the holiday season practically here (this according to folks in retail with their wack -excuse me, Black Friday sales and those Lite FM stations that are now playing Christmas tunes ad nauseum), “Christmas Candlelight” would make a fine addition to Adult Contemporary and Smooth Jazz radio playlists. Looking forward to hearing more from the Jazz In Pink ladies.
