(August 7, 2026) When two of the great songwriters of our time get together, the result is usually memorable. And when they combine to write about someone who was so special to one of them, then you can really get something special.
That’s the case with the new song “Love Was You,” written by longtime SoulTracks favorites Gordon Chambers and James Day and performed by Chambers. The song is a dedication to Day’s beloved mother, who died last year.
When nobody else knew what to do
You stood by my side
Until it was my turn hold you too
Like you did all my life
James Day tells us,“I believe it is one of the finest songs I’ve ever helped craft. And, because it is dedicated to my mother, I am especially grateful to Gordon Chambers for putting both feet into this one.”
A gentle arrangement underscores the touching nature of the song. Day says, “I produced the track with U-NAM, a virtual one-man band, who was responsible for all the song’s instruments. The icing on this sentimental cake was having it mixed by Eddie Stokes. Collectively, I knew this team would help me achieve exactly the sound I wanted. So, it’s no surprise that I couldn’t be happier with the results.”
We have to agree on his conclusions. “Love Was You” is both intimate and personal, and its message resonates with those of us who have lost loved ones and would love to tell them what they meant to us.
