First Listen: James Biscuit Rouse pays tribute to Buddy Miles

(September 19, 2024) Many years ago I had the pleasure and honor of spotlighting the tune “In Between Times” by drummer/bandleader James “Biscuit” Rouse on my podcast, New Grooves Radio. As time went on, I learned that Rouse was putting together a tribute album, honoring his longtime hero, legendary drummer Buddy Miles.

After years of stops and starts, the Biscuit and Buddy album will arrive on September 27th. While the disc will contain tunes recorded by the late drum master (“Them Changes”, “Down By The River”), Rouse offers a few originals. One of them, “GI Gina” is a funk romp where Rouse tells the story of dealing with toxicity within a relationship. No matter whether the love is there, Biscuit spells out plainly that the outweighing misery just ain’t worth it.

Now, don’t let the opening synth drum fool you: Within a few scant seconds, Rouse and the band kick in the funk and keep it going. I like that “GI Gina” is a compact tune – get in, get the point over and get out within three minutes.

As a fan of James “Biscuit” Rouse, I’m glad the Buddy Miles tribute album will FINALLY see the light of day. With tunes like “GI Gina” and others, Rouse’s brand of funk and soul will definitely get one through any in between times.
