(July 2, 2026) Jamal Roberts has been on top of the musical world, in 2025 winning Season 23 of American Idol, and certainly opening new opportunities to share his artistic talent on bigger stages. This post-Idol chapter proved he was the real vocal deal through his first several singles – from the sensual “Perfect for Me” to an anthem of moving forward through life’s obstacles, “Head Up.” And his introduction to SoulTracks delivered a super charged duet with Dove and Stellar Award winner Jonathan McReynolds on “Still,” a declaration of God’s faithfulness. But getting deeply personal, if anyone were to ask this Meridian, Mississippi native what renders a smile behind any entertainment platform, his unquestionable dedication belongs to three young daughters.
Now Roberts further addresses his off-stage passion for fatherhood by releasing his latest track, “Girl Dad” (19 Recordings/BMG Rights Mgmt.). Produced by co-songwriter Emile Ghantous (who assisted with “Perfect for Me” and other Roberts singles), the soundtrack grooves along in an old school R&B ballad swagger that would normally be right at home on a hot Charlie Wilson hit. Yet, Ghantous’ modern soft percussive breaks frosted by Leslie Johnson’s guitar and Jordan XL on keys drop a precious foundation for Roberts’ pensive narrative boasting about why parenting possesses many benefits:
“Barrettes and bows, I paint their toes,
Then help pick out their clothes,
And Heaven knows what I feel looking in their face,
They call me daddy and that is my happy place.”
All in all, Roberts’ personal invitation inside his happy place that is “Girl Dad” offers a memorable and calming listen.
