First Listen: J. Saint James slows it down on “The Running Man”

(November 12, 2025) “The Running Man,” the new single by UK Soul Man J Saint James, tells a story of a man who is compelled to stay on the move. Sometimes he’s chasing something. Other times he’s running away from something. However, this soul/pop ballad is more focused on what he leaves behind on his journeys.

J Saint James’ character leaves someone he loves and who cares about him standing by the door waiting. Like all great songs that tell the story of a long-suffering lover or child, J Saint James sings from the standpoint of a man who is consumed by self-awareness and guilt. He can’t stay still even though he knows his flights leave a whirlwind of hurt and distrust in his wake.

Like many great works of art, J Saint James says that the inspiration for “The Running Man” comes from the stuff of real life: “The Running Man’ came from a very personal place. I wrote it during a time when I was constantly moving physically, emotionally, and creatively, never quite able to settle. The song captures that feeling of wanting love and stability but also being haunted by the instinct to run. Working on it in the studio with Richie B reignited the same energy I had when I first started out. It’s soulful, cinematic, and honest; every lyric feels like a confession. For me, this track marks both a return and a rebirth.”
