(October 12, 2023) Incognito has been putting it down for 44 years. It’s amazing to realize that band leader Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick has kept this thing going for this long, and it’s even more amazing when you consider that Incognito is a band in the truest sense of the word. Incognito has opted against relying on the technology that is ubiquitous on today’s airwaves and leaned into being a band that sports a horn section and a drummer that plays the skins rather than a programmed drum machine that makes trap beats.
That decision has resulted in Incognito having a deeply loyal following in the UK, Europe, Asia and in the United States. It is that American following to whom Bluey dedicates “Back On the Beach,” the lead track from Incognito’s upcoming album Into You that is due to be released on Oct.20. Bluey said that Incognito recorded the song to honor the Smooth Jazz community in the United States that invited and flocked to jazz festivals.
“Back On The Beach” is mostly an instrumental number that a song vocal hook featuring Bluey himself. The song features some excellent musicianship as guitarist, bassist, drummer, and the horn section engage in a musical give and take conversation. All that stands on the firm and funky foundation of the bass line. “Back On The Beach” will be a tune that fans will request when Incognito returns stateside for another smooth jazz festival season.
