Legendary funk trailblazers return as Hott Wax

(August 22, 2025) The British band Hott Wax had a run that parallels the self-contained R&B and funk banda on this side of the Atlantic Ocean in the 1970s. During the 70s, the band was renamed Hi Tension, and scored several hits under that name. When listening to a song like their “If It Moves You,” you can hear a bit of a Roy Ayers vibe.

Now founding members Paul Phillips and Jeff Guishard have brought back the band’s original name, Hott Wax, and a new song that captures the energy and fun of 1970s era funk, regardless of where the music was made. That song, “Love the Way You Feel the Funk,” is being featured in this First Listen.

“The funk has always been our heartbeat,” Guishard noted. The band says “Love the Way You Feel the Funk,” is a celebration of the kind of music that crowded dance floors and skating rinks in the 1970s.

You can hear that in the chanted lyrics, the tight horn section and the on-the-one work on bass and drums. Check it out here.
