(May 8, 2023) Amazing that it was ten years between albums for Zambia-born, UK-based Hilary Mwelwa, p/k/a Hil St. Soul. Since the late 1990’s, she’s dazzled fans with her solid neo-soul works, ranging from originals to remakes (her early single was an update of the Isley Brothers’ “For The Love Of You”). After a decade break to “(search) for some greater musical inspiration” (Hil’s words from her press release), she’s back with the mellow soul sender, “Fingerprints.”
The latest single from her latest Shanachie Entertainment album, Back In Love, “Fingerprints” is what Hil calls “a love letter to her fans”. The midtempo stepper doesn’t lose a beat as it carries a steady rhythm from the drum and keyboards as Hil explains quite soulfully and pointedly that even though a love may be gone, they’ve still left their “fingerprints” on her heart, mind and spirit. Spot on vocals and a mellow groove with that neo-70’s vibe makes “Fingerprints” a winner.
An enjoyable single that’s been available as an album cut for a couple months, Hil St. Soul’s “Fingerprints” is a fine addition to a spring and summertime soulful soundtrack. Looking forward to more tasty soulful treats from Hilary.
