First Listen: Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes rework a classic

(July 28, 2018) Back during the heyday of Philadelphia soul music, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes were among the biggest groups in the world, with hits like “Wake Up Everybody” and “The Love I Lost” topping the charts. The departure of Teddy Pendergrass for a solo career, and the 1997 death of group leader Harold Melvin, led to a group name change to Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, but the show has continued to go on, as the group continues to tour the world in multi-act soul music shows.

Over the past year we’ve featured the work of longtime Blue Notes member Jerry Cummings, who has become increasingly active releasing new music. This week Jerry sent to us a new release from Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes that recalls a classic. “If You Don’t Know Christ By Now” is a remake of the former #1 hit, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” but with new lyrics of praise written by Cummings, who also produced the song for the group.

The group sounds quite good on the ballad, and it has a message of faith that works on a lot of levels. Check it out below.
