(October 25, 2024) Is there anything that the great Gregory Porter does that we don’t love? I don’t think so. So when he issues new music, we perk right up. And for his newest single, Porter goes to an unusual source: A former James Bond movie song written by legendary songwriters Hal David and John Barry.
“We Have All the Time In the World” was originally a rather underappreciated song from the soundtrack for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, but found a second life in the late 60s as part of a television commercial. And now it is back a third time with an arrangement that is dramatically different than the Louis Armstrong original but is still of the period.
Producers Swindle and Cam Blackwood deliver a lightly swinging 60s arrangement with swirling strings and flute, all supporting Porter’s recognizable baritone voice. The result is a tune that would have fit right in on The Hollywood Palace, circa 1967, and sounds delightful more than a half century later.
