(July 28, 2021) The uber-versatile members of Gideon King & City Blog have won over fans in the pop and jazz realms and, with the release of the hot new single “Whatchya Gonna Do,” may just conquer the soul music world too.
With a sound that is half Steely Dan, half Moonchild, GK&CB delivers a funky number with a light feel that belies the real lyrical question the group asks about life after a pandemic. As the band puts it, “It’s about emerging from COVID. Will people be better or will they go back to psychic stagnancy?”
A sweet vocal wall of sound and a steady, danceable beat make this a summer treat that perhaps helps us answer the question posed by the song about what we’ll do “when the city’s back in play”: We’ll be riding down Woodward Avenue in Detroit with the top down, listening to this breezy jam.
