First Listen: Gemia Burns is the best kind of legacy

(March 5, 2021) Gemia Burns is someone who is very comfortable in recording studios and on stages across America. That becomes apparent from the moment she sings the first note of her latest song, “When I Think of U.” However, that confidence and ease of delivery didn’t come from nowhere. Recording studios and stages have been something of a second home for Burns. She’s served as a backing vocalist for legends like Ben E. King and Freda Payne. She’s also performed with songwriter and producer Preston Glass, who is her father.

Despite her background and obvious talent, Burns was somewhat reluctant to step into the spotlight. Fortunately, this talented vocalist takes her turn as a solo performer on “When I Think of U.” And guess who’s also in the background delivering those tight backing harmonies. It’s Gemia Burns! Burns decided to step out, she really stepped out. There’s a lot about this song to like, particularly if you’re a fan of those lush 1970s era Philadelphia International Records by groups like The Three Degrees.

There’s the tight horn section, the jazzy saxophone solo and the lyrics that lean totally into unabashed romance. And then there is Gemia Burns’ voice. It’s been said that Glass kept young Gemia around the studio to lend her voice to backing vocals because of her perfect pitch. Well, Mr. Glass knows his music and he definitely knew about the talented young lady living under his roof. Now we get to learn about Gemia Burns and hopefully we will get to hear more. Check out “When I Think of U” here.
