(December 11, 2020) Christmas is a holiday where people hope to fulfill their deepest longing. That longing may be for a long-desired material thing to be placed under the tree in a box with their name on it. There will be a lot of people hoping for the latest electronic gadget or fashion, and plenty of gift-givers will move heaven and earth to grant that Christmas wish. And in a year when the personal, financial, health and social losses continue to mount, 2020 may be the year to show those you love that you caught their hints by getting them the gift they have been hinting about since summer.
Of course, the best gifts are those you can’t buy – connecting with those you love, good health and that old standby of peace of earth and goodwill toward men. These longings, the one we can’t put a price tag on, have been recurring themes in some of the best loved Christmas songs, ranging from “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” to “Someday at Christmas.” And it is also the theme of “Christmas 2020” the topical holiday tune that features the vocals of Frank McComb and the flute of Najee.
It’s not surprising that McComb and Najee decided to make a holiday song like “Christmas 2020” that looks retrospectively at the previous 12 months to make the point that this Christmas peace on earth and goodwill toward men is needed more than ever. The two bring that message home in an upbeat song that nonetheless recognizes that in a year when disease, death, war and famine ran rampant, the gifts we really need are the one we won’t find under the tree.
